The History of Steam Radiators

by admin on May 21, 2009

Steam radiators have been used to comfortably and reliable heat homes for over a hundred years. When introduced, they enabled common people to heat their houses without the need to burn anything. This cut down fires, and probably saved countless lives. We owe all of this to one man – Joseph Nason. In the 1860s, Nason built the first free standing radiator. This used steam which was generated in a boiler elsewhere. Because the boiler was kept in another room, flammable objects like furniture and paper were removed from an open source of flames. Steam radiators significantly improved the life of the common man, and was used almost exclusively until the twentieth century. At this time, hot water radiators started to overtake the good old reliable steam radiator. However, these vintage beauties are still seen in use to this very day.
