Teaching English in France

It can be tough to find English teaching jobs in France, especially for non-EU members, but it can be done. If you have a college education and some teaching experience (even one year will suffice) you will have better luck finding work. Teaching English in Europe normally requires a TEFL certificate on top of your other credentials. Teaching in France is possible; it is just a matter of getting the right certifications, and knowing where to look for employment.

Getting a teaching job in France takes a bit more effort than in other areas. You will need to have a degree from a recognisable institution. You will also most likely need a completed course in TEFL. Make sure to sign up for a course that offers in-class training. Your employer will want to know that you have had practical training. Take a course through an organization that will be recognized by your French employer. Cambridge and Trinity are well known and provide good training.

It is a good idea to have some basic French speaking, reading, and even writing skills. This will show your employers that you are serious about working in France. It will also prove helpful when it comes to living and getting around France. If you live outside the EU you will have to make sure that you get all your papers in order and work out your visa to make sure that you can legally work in France.

You have the choice of either looking for work before you leave, by searching for jobs online, or by trying out your luck once you arrive. It’s up to you which way you prefer to find work. In France, an English teacher can find work as a private tutor, teaching in an English language school, at a university, or teaching as an assistant at a college (aged 11-14) or lycée (aged 15-18).

Lastly, don’t expect to make a lot of money in France. Teaching will give you enough money to pay for your living expenses, but you won’t make enough to save money.
