Profile of the American Staffordshire Terrier

by admin on May 15, 2009

Most people do not know the difference between the American Staffordshire Terrier and the American Pit Bull. While considered the same class, they are listed by different registries as two distinctly different dog breeds. Both dogs are bred with the same builds to possess the same qualities, but whereas the American Pit Bull is considered the fighting strain and the American Staffordshire Terrier is bred as a show dog.

While the American Staffordshire Terrier has stable and calm temperament, it still retains the aggressiveness of the American Pit Bull and as far as classifications for dangerous dogs go, they are both interchangeable when it comes to laws that affect the Pit Bull. Because this is a highly energetic dog, training requires consistently firm commands from a dominating owner and, as a puppy, it is not advisable to go too long before enrolling the dog in obedience school
