It been a few weeks now since I’ve picked up the Haier Model CPRD12XH7 (12,000 BTU Cool/9,500 BTU Heat) portable air conditioner from our local super store. The idea was to use this to cool our bedroom at night without having to run the central air conditioning system at our normal 78 degrees which cools the whole house. We figured that if we can push the thermostat of our central system up to 83 degrees at bedtime and use the new portable unit in conjunction with our ceiling fan to cool us as night, those 5 degrees will most likely save us a bundle on our monthly electricty bill.
Well, the electricty bill hasn’t arrived yet and we haven’t been using it for a whole month yet but the the portable air conditioner is doing it’s job and keeping us cool at night. We’re half way home. I can’t imagine that the cost of operating a 12,000 BTU portable unit will even come close to running what the central unit operrating cost were, but we’ll see shortly and report back.
