When thinking about exterior lighting you should focus only on three important aspects. Your first and possibly most important consideration is security lighting. After security lighting we need to think about localized lighting arrangements, or to use a more familiar term, task lighting. Lastly when considering exterior lighting we should not forget that we can create wonderful lighting effects in our gardens with the use of accent lighting.
We will cover each of the three available options in turn. It is a well know fact, confirmed by the police, that a brightly lit neighborhood is more likely to discourage unwanted intruders than one for which the darkness provides cover. If you want brightly lit neighborhood conditions at night then each member of the neighborhood, starting with yourself should consider exterior lighting.
If you habitually enjoy barbecues on you patio then you will know full well that sometimes they drift on until darkness has fallen. You will know that when working around the barbecue area it needs to be clear of any hazards, but also well lit. The type of exterior lighting most appropriate in these circumstances is task lighting. The light would, in effect, light the specific tasks you are undertaking, but the useful thing about task lighting is that it does not light any other areas to the same degree.
Accent lighting is the use of exterior lights to light up interesting features in your gardens, such as large foliage plants, statues or water features. This sort of exterior lighting is great for creating atmosphere in your outside space from which you can maximise the enjoyment of your garden.
