Deck lighting is a great way to extend the length of time that you can enjoy your outdoor “living room”.  Avoid the headaches that flood lights can cause and choose a high quality low-voltage (12v) lighting system.  Not only does it create a softer, more pleasant aesthetic, it is more cost-effective to operate and is safer to use outdoors than line voltage (120v).  Low-voltage lighting does require a small investment in an outdoor transformer; expect a good transformer to cost between $100 and $200, and the individual deck lights to be in the $20-$50 range.  This can be broken up into stages, if need be, and the transformer can also be used to power landscape lighting as well.  Make sure you purchase a transformer large enough to anticipate future expansion.  Landscape lighting can be addictive!  With basic working-knowledge of wiring, this is a project that anyone can handle.  Bring pictures of your project to your local lighting showroom and get help laying out your lighting plan correctly.  It will make a big difference in getting professional, long-term results.
