Not all concrete blocks are created equal. There is a basic standard of quality set forth by the National Concrete Masonry Association that all buildings must meet. The concrete block standard is based on the density, which comes directly from the aggregate. Thus, it is a simple matter of using quality to build better, stronger buildings even at an increased cost. The structure beams that are made of steel rely in concrete block to hold them up.
The density of the block coupled with the design of the building and strength of the steel beams can determine the structural integrity of a building. The day to day stress is usually not enough to show poor building quality. Structural tests such as extreme weather events can be the key element in the destruction of a poor quality structure.
